Sifting Shimmers is an interdisciplinary body of work that explores the familial order of context of the normative, food traditions, and labor dynamics in domestic space. Making and eating traditions nourish our bodies and connect us to our families and histories. Drawing from culinary traditions this work explores the inherent complexities and fragility of familial structures framed by the promise of happiness. Feeder explores ideas of family and the conditioned promise of happiness through a mothers’ eulogy. Her devotion through culinary traditions suggests both a utopic sentimentality and a conditioned ideology of female virtuosity upheld by loyalty and service to others. The forceful act of feeding the passive character presents an uncomfortable tension in contrast to the virtues recited.
